WELD 272 - Advanced Gas Metal Arc Welding PREREQUISITES/COREQUISITE: WELD 207 - Gas Metal Arc (MIG) Welding
PROGRAM: Industrial Technology CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 1 LAB HOURS MIN: 4 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall 2022
This course provides advanced skills and fundamental knowledge in Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). This course is designed for intermediate to advanced welders and fabricators and those seeking welder certification. Safe practices in Gas Metal Arc Welding are emphasized throughout the course. In addition, this course will prepare students to take nationally recognized certification exam(s).
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
1. Demonstrate the proper safety procedures in GMAW. [e,f]
2. Learn proper AWS Standard Welding Terms and Definition. [e,f]
3. Perform weld restarts that are smooth and even with GMAW using short circuiting transfer equipment on mild steel. [e,f]
4. Perform single and multi-pass GMAW welds.
5. Perform Multi-pass fillet GMAW welds in horizontal, vertical and overhead positions. [e,f]
6. Perform GMAW welds increasing in length through the semester to minimum of 8 inches. [e, f]
7. Perform GMAW welds on variable thicknesses of material. [e, f]
8. Perform GMAW using spray transfer on thick ¼” or greater mild steel in the flat position. [e,f]
9. Perform GMAW lap, tee welds on aluminum in the flat position. [e,f]
10. Understand welding procedure specifications (WPS) and be able to follow them. [e, f]
11. Understand the basic metallurgical properties of steel and aluminum and how they are affected by welding. [e, f]
12. Understand GMAW electrode selection. [e, f]
13. Demonstrate ability to prepare weldments and attempt to earn a nationally recognized certification from AWS [e, f]
14. Demonstrate ability to read and interpret technical documents. [b, e]
15. Demonstrate ability to use various types of software applicable to course. [a]
