This course is a continuation of DMSI 122. First trimester obstetrical sonography will be covered. Embryology of the human fetus, embryonic support structures, and normal and abnormal developmental progression of the embryo will be covered. Infertility, genetic testing, and embryonic demise will be discussed. Scanning considerations applied to the first trimester pregnancy will be covered.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1.  Describe the embryogenesis of the human fetus.

2.  Describe different forms of infertility.

3.  Identify normal and abnormal sonographic appearances of the first trimester pregnancy.

4.  Recognize the sonographic appearance of pathology and pathophysiologic affects that can occur in the first trimester of pregnancy.

5.  Understand the effects of hormones of the first trimester of pregnancy.

6.  Describe genetic testing conducted in the first trimester of pregnancy.

7.  List basic first trimester scanning protocols and correlating laboratory levels.

8.  List basic protocol for transabdominal and transvaginal pelvic scanning.

9.  Understand safety considerations applied to the first trimester of pregnancy.
