This course is a continuation of the second and third trimester fetus. The fetal genitourinary system and musculoskeletal structures will be discussed. The maternal and fetal support structures, congenital anomalies, as well as fetal/ maternal syndromes will be covered. Alternate and supplemental testing will be explained. Multiple fetal pregnancies, associated complications, and fetal Doppler will also be addressed. Normal and abnormal development, pathology, and pathophysiologic effects will be explained for each of the fetal systems. The embryologic development of each system will be discussed.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Identify on diagram and sonographic image the normal and abnormal fetal anatomy.
- Perform basic protocol for the fetus in the second and third trimester including genitourinary and musculoskeletal systems.
- Describe the effects of pathophysiology on maternal and fetal organs and organ systems.
- Define sonographic appearance of congenital anomalies, and the effects of syndromes on the mother and fetus.
- Understand the use of Doppler in the fetal examination.
- Understand the nature of multiple fetus pregnancies and potential complications.
- Define fetal evaluation for anomalies and well-being, testing methods and protocols used for testing in each of the covered systems.
- Recognize the landmarks used for proper measurements of fetal biometry and fetal Doppler procedures.
- Describe the assessment methods used for fetal support structures, placenta and amniotic fluid as well as normal and abnormal examination results.
- Define post-partum conditions and sonographic appearances of these complications.
- Outline interventional procedures performed in the second and third trimester pregnancy.
