DMSI 151 - Vascular Sonography II and Clinical Orientation Lab II PREREQUISITES: DMSI 149 PROGRAM: Diagnostic Medical Sonography CREDIT HOURS MIN: 2 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 1 LAB HOURS MIN: 1 TOTAL CONTACT HOURS MIN: 2 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall 2022
This course is a continuation of the studies of the cerebrovascular system and will focus on the principles of hemodynamics and how disease affects these principles. Waveform analysis in the normal and abnormal system will be defined. Transcranial Doppler methods and uses will be covered. Interpretation of the waveforms and exam findings will be explained. Standards affecting the vascular sonographer and the cerebrovascular system will be discussed. Alternate imaging modalities will be covered. Terminology applied to sonography of the cerebrovascular system will be explained.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Describe the rules of hemodynamics and how pathology changes these rules.
2. Understand the role of noninvasive vascular testing in the diagnosis of vascular disease in the cerebrovascular system.
3. Differentiate between normal and abnormal B-mode and Doppler findings.
4. Relate findings to the underlying anatomy/physiology and other changes attributable to vascular disease.
5. Use recommended interpretation criteria, understanding their value and limitations.
6. Understand the important elements of composing and generating preliminary and final reports using correct terminology.
7. Understand various regulatory issues affecting the vascular ultrasound profession.
8. Describe treatment methods used in cerebrovascular disease.
9. Describe the processes of alternate imaging processes and their role in the patient’s care as well as limitations of these exams.
10. Use terminology applicable to the sonographer and the vascular system.
