DMSI 137 - Cardiac Sonography Lab
PREREQUISITES: Admission into the DMSI program.

This lab will introduce the students to basic concepts of sonography, machine controls and exam protocols. Image optimization and patient care skill will be applied during this time. Content and lab practice shall be assigned for sequential development, application, critical analysis, and evaluation of concepts and theories in the performance of general sonographic procedures. The structured lab practice will prepare the student to for the clinical experience, competency-based assignments in the clinical setting, concepts of teamwork and patient care. Lab performance and skills will be evaluated in a similar fashion as evaluation in the clinical setting. Patient care and scanning skills as well as proper ergonomic techniques are learned and practiced in the lab.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Demonstrate principles of professional ethics.

Demonstrate practice and basic understanding of common exams.
Perform basic routine scans to show clinical readiness.
Perform sonographic examinations using proper ergonomic techniques.
Demonstrate knowledge of knobology and image optimization techniques.
Understand routine patient care skills and regulations such as HIPAA and ALARA.
COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include - Organs and systems covered in DMSI 135 as well as other structures and systems not covered.
The student is to practice and gain competence in assigned structures, but also gain knowledge and experience in any other exams involved in during the lab experience.

Basic echocardiographic windows and views
