DMSI 109 - Abdominal Sonography II and Clinical Orientation Lab II PREREQUISITES: DMSI 108 Abdominal Sonography I and Clinical Orientation Lab I PROGRAM: Diagnostic Medical Sonography CREDIT HOURS MIN: 2 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 1 LAB HOURS MIN: 2 TOTAL CONTACT HOURS MIN: 2 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall 2022
This course introduces and familiarizes the student with the basic abdominal anatomy and physiology related to abdominal sonography. The student will also learn to identify cross sectional/relational and sonographic anatomy, and embryologic organ development. The sonographer’s role in the examination of organs. Pathologies of the organ structures are covered as well as pathophysiologic effects on organs, systems and appearances. Also discussed are the indications for the urinary system, splenic system, and abdominal vasculature based on history, physical examination, laboratory values, alternate, concordant, and correlating imaging procedures. Patient care during exams, exam modification based on patient status, pathological process, and use of alternate imaging enhancers such as contrast are also discussed.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Identify both on diagram and sonographic image, normal and abnormal abdominal anatomy and variants.
- Describe and identify abdominal and or small part organs and components as well as relational anatomy. Organs and systems to include but not limited to: kidney, bladder, adrenals, abdominal vasculature, spleen and peritoneal and retroperitoneal areas.
- Discriminate the visual, lab and Doppler appearance of pathophysiology on organs and organ systems.
- Identify normal and abnormal visceral Doppler waveforms.
- Describe normal methods of measurements, protocol inclusion, Doppler waveform acquisition, adaptation to patient condition.
- Evaluate and integrate clinical information and or sonographic information for the formation of differential diagnoses, patient care adjustments, exam modification and exam implementation.
- Understand exams using of contrast enhancing materials.
- Define common technical settings of the ultrasound equipment and adjust parameters for image optimization.
- Explain and introduce sterile procedures and processes of ultrasound guided exams and define the sonographer’s role in interventional procedures.
- List basic protocol for abdominal scanning in the Ivy Tech lab for the kidney, bladder, adrenals, abdominal vasculature, spleen, and peritoneal and retroperitoneal areas.
