Course Description: Provides the student with an overview of radiography and patient care. Provides the student with the basic patient care principles and concepts they are likely to encounter in various clinical situations in the healthcare setting. Provides the student with the concepts of pathological disorders and disease processes. Topics include: surgical asepsis, sterile techniques, vital signs, medical emergencies, care of the patient in trauma and/or mobile situations, care of pediatric & geriatric patients, care of patients during gastrointestinal and genitourinary exams, care of patients with catheters and tubes, pharmacology, drug administration, contrast media, venipuncture and EKG.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. The student will demonstrate understanding of the role of the radiographer in promoting patient wellness.
2.The student will demonstrate knowledge of emergency procedures in the radiology department.
3. The student will demonstrate knowledge of asepsis in the radiology department.
4. The student will explain the stages of death and dying to include the ethical, emotional, personal and physical aspects it has on the radiographer and patient.
5. The student wil explain various means of communication and demonstrate an understanding of human diversity.
6. The student will demonstrate correct principles of body mechanics when transferring patients.
7. The student will describe method of evaluating patient status, patient history and the use of various immobilization techniques.
8. The student will describe the vital signs and laboratory values used to assess the patient’s condition and know normal values.
9. The student will demonstrate knowledge of venipuncture.
10. The student will demonstrate knowledge of the procedure employed to properly prepare and monitor a patient during contrast studies.
