HUMS 140 - Loss and Grief
PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or earning a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College and ENGL 093 - Introduction to College Writing , or ENGL 095 - Integrated Reading and Writing , or ENGL 075 - Co-Requisite Integrated Reading .

Introductory course that provides practical and useful information for people who have experienced loss. Students have the opportunity to evaluate their own experiences and attitudes toward loss and grief.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
- Define loss, grief, mourning, and bereavement.
- Identify and explain common theories related to the grief and mourning process.
- Explain the psychosocial needs of persons in bereavement.
- Discuss issues related to children and loss.
- Explain the function of the hospice movement.
- Discuss ethical and moral issues related to loss and grief.
- Identify complicated grief issues.
COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -
- Contemporary attitudes toward death
- Children and loss
- The hospice movement
- Ethical and legal issues
- Coping with loss
