This course provides an in-depth examination of the unique issues, challenges, and considerations involved in substance abuse counseling. Students will explore the needs of special populations, such as adolescents, older adults, individuals with co-occurring disorders, and diverse cultural groups, in the context of addiction treatment. The course also covers various treatment modalities, including individual counseling, group therapy, family interventions, and evidence-based practices tailored to specific populations. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the complexities of substance use disorders, developing effective assessment and treatment planning skills, and applying culturally competent strategies. Additionally, the course addresses ethical and legal issues, including confidentiality and compliance with regulations, to prepare students for professional practice in substance abuse counseling Course meets some of the academic requirements toward state addictions licensure and may meet the educational requirements from other industry certifications.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Identify the unique needs of special populations in substance abuse counseling.
- Evaluate appropriate screening methods for treating and counseling clients with substance use disorders (SUD).
- Analyze relevant case studies to understand practical applications in SUD treatment.
- Explore various treatment modalities used for substance use disorders.
- Examine the role and importance of case management in working with SUD clients.
- Explain confidentiality regulations, including HIPAA and Title 42 CFR, in the context of SUD counseling.
- Assess various assessment techniques, including formal tools, clinical evaluations, and Biopsychosocial (BSP) approaches.
- Develop and demonstrate a substance use disorder treatment plan incorporating SMART goals.
- Explore the dynamics and significance of the therapeutic relationship in SUD counseling.
- Analyze ethical considerations and challenges in the treatment of substance use disorders.
- Discuss the role of support groups and group counseling in SUD treatment and recovery.
- Identify effective prevention programs and evaluate their impact on addiction prevention efforts.
