This course prepares the therapist to work in hospital settings, rehabilitation centers, physical therapy, health care, and other medical facilities. It also addresses medical considerations of various special populations through massage to promote healing, support, comfort, and adjunct therapies.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Vary the choice of application of techniques as appropriate to the client’s needs, including those of special populations (E 2.2 III)
- Demonstrate techniques that are appropriate for each body area, including endangerment sites (E 2.2 IV)
- Explain the value of research to the profession (E.6.3.I).
- Identify sources of published research literature on therapeutic massage and bodywork (6.3.II).
- Critically read and evaluate a published research article in the field of massage therapy and bodywork (6.3.III).
- Discuss considerations affecting massage for clients with common medical conditions.
- Demonstrate or simulate massage techniques for specific medical conditions such as: cancer, stroke, CHF, ADD, AIDS, MD, MS, PTSD, amputations, arthritis, and cerebral palsy, and common drug treatments.
- Administer massage techniques for wheelchair riders and clients with other medical and orthopedic devices.
- Demonstrate massage techniques for clients who are bedridden.
- Illustrate pressure adjustments, site restrictions and special positioning required for specific medical conditions.
- Compare and contrast different protocols of various medical facility considerations for medical treatments and conditions.
- Explain the relationships of various medications to specific medical conditions and massage indications/contraindications.
- Differentiate how massage affects drug disbursement from injections and patches.

Indications, contraindications and precautions for special populations and medical conditions
Knowledge of referral, authorization, agreement and documentation forms used in health care facilities
Pressure, site and positioning considerations
