Many students find themselves passionate about working in a law office but have no prior office experience. Students will get the opportunity to learn about how to manage and conduct the work that happens in a law office in a simulated law office environment. The course will allow students to feel more confident in their ability to assimilate into the day-to-day workings of a law office.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
1. Explain issues relating to employment and promotion of paralegals, legal administrative assistants, and other law office personnel.
2. Describe different types of law offices including their organization, managment, and personnel structures.
3. Identify the different management, administrative, and support roles performed by lawyers and non-lawyers in the law office.
4. Demonstrate law office billing practices and calendaring/task management practices.
5. Utilize systems frequently used in a law practice, such as client relation systems, conflict management systems, personnel systems, docket and calendaring systems, and billing systems.
6. Model appropriate office and communication etiquette.
7. Perform routine office tasks such as printing, copying, scanning, and filing.
8. Simulate a day in a law office.
