CRIM 232 - Indiana Jail Officer Course


PREREQUISITES: Program Chair Approval
CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3
TOTAL CONTACT HOURS MIN: 48
This course is based on the Indiana jail officer training course requirements as stated in IC 11-12-4-4 and recommendations by the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board.  Successful completion of this course may result in the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy 40-hour jail officer certification.

 

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Identify and apply techniques used to interact with inmates with a mental illness.
  2. Identify and apply techniques used to interact with inmates with developmental disabilities.
  3. Identify and apply techniques used to interact with inmates with intellectual disabilities.
  4. Identify and apply techniques used to interact with inmates with addictive disorders.
  5. Summarize jail procedures, including booking, fingerprinting, report writing, and inmate release.
  6. Identify security issues in a jail setting.
  7. Apply legal principles of search and seizure and evidence collection in a jail setting.
  8. Identify ethical issues in a jail setting.
  9. Summarize use of force legal standards.
  10. Explain the importance of a culturally competent jail officer.
  11. Identify sources of stress potentially harmful to job performance.

County Jail Standards (IDOC) - 2 hours

Basic Jail Security - 2 hours

Admission/Booking/Fingerprinting - 1.5 hours

Classification of Inmates - 3 hours

Report Writing - 1 hour 

Ethics - 1 hour

Legal Issues - 2 hours

Crime Scene Management (Evidence in Jail) - 2 hours

Searches and Contraband - 1 hour

Use of Force - 1 hour

Suicide Awareness - 2 hours

Medical Care - 2 hours

F  59 - Below
Students scoring 74% or lower on the final exam will receive no higher than a D as their final grade.
