This course will offer an in-depth study of the basic principles of chemistry as they specifically relate to funeral service. Especially stressed are the chemical principles and precautions involved in sanitation, disinfection, public health, and embalming practice. Emphasis is placed on selected aspects of general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry as they relate to decomposition, disinfection, and the process of embalming.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Objectives:Upon satisfactory completion of a course of study in Chemistry, the student should be able to:
1. Understand why general chemistry is the foundation for embalming chemistry;
2. Identify potentially harmful chemicals used in the funeral home;
3. Describe theusage,safe handling, and storage of chemicals in the funeral home;
4. Identify components of embalming chemicals and describe their respective functions;
5. Describe the characteristic processes of decomposition;
6. Relate organic chemistry andembalmingchemistry to the preparation for disposition of human remains;
7. Define the basic components of biochemistry.
