This course covers clinically important diseases and disease processes occurring in small animals. This course covers the causes, pathogenesis, clinical signs, and treatment and prevention of each disease. In addition, this course also discusses nutritional requirements for large animals in all life stages.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Describe the causes, pathogenesis, clinical signs, treatment, and prevention of clinically relevant small animal diseases.
  2. Describe common zoonotic diseases of small animals as they apply to animal health and public safety.
  3. Communicate the information that a client or owner would need in the event that an animal is diagnosed with a specific disease.
  4. Discuss biosecurity and isolation procedures necessary in small animal facilities.
  5. Discuss reproduction and obstetric procedures, diseases, and concerns in small animal species.
  6. Discuss energy and nutrient requirements for various life stages of large animals and list substances that when ingested, result in toxicity.

* Record keeping and communication regarding diseases to owners and producers
