This course provides students with additional instruction and hands-on experience with laboratory tests commonly used in veterinary practice. Topics include identification of internal parasites, performance and evaluation of serologic tests, collection and evaluation of cytological samples, identifying and analyzing viruses and veterinary necropsy procedures. Included in this course is a review of the anatomy and physiology of major body systems as well as a review of common diseases, including viral diseases, seen in veterinary practice.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

Identify and describe the life cycle of select internal and external parasites of companion animals, livestock and exotic species.

Compare the different aspets of the immune system and discuss immunologic testing commonly performed in veterinary medicine.

Describe important features of viruses relevant to veterinary medicine.

Identify causative viruses and the veterinary diseases that they are associated with.

Properly prepare, handle and store specimens for laboratory analysis.

Perform parasitological tests to identify select internal and externa parasites of veterinary medicine.

Perform and evaluate serologic tests relevant to veterinary medicine.

Perform a postmortem examination of a non-preserved animal.

Demonstrate appropriate laboratory techniques used in the identification of viruses relevant to veterinary medicine.
