This course explores the dynamic field of veterinary nursing through our hands-on externship course. Designed to complement classroom learning, this learning experience offers students the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world veterinary settings. Under the guidance of experienced veterinary professionals, participants will gain practical skills in animal care, medical procedures, and client interaction. Through a structured and immersive experience, students will enhance their clinical competencies, develop teamwork and communication skills, and gain insight into the day-to-day responsibilities of a veterinary nurse. This externship serves as a valuable bridge between academic study and professional practice, preparing aspiring veterinary nurses for a successful and fulfilling career in the veterinary healthcare industry.
In this particular externship, students will focus on the tasks and skills needed in the treatment area, surgery suite, and hospital area such as tasks related to surgery, diagnostic imaging, dentistry, emergency/ critical care, and nursing care for hospitalized patients. This will not preclude the student from continuing to improve on all previous skills gained from other externships. Students will document their experience and gain deeper understanding through weekly reflection papers and class discussions over a specific topic each week.
Students enrolled in this course will prepare for and take the Veterinary Technician National Examination VTNE.
