INDT 110 - Intro Data Center Operations CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 2 LAB HOURS MIN: 2 By taking this course, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of key areas related to data center operations, including energy efficiency concepts such as calculating airflow and determining Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), as well as illustrating UPS double-conversion theory. They will learn about fire suppression systems, general safety best practices, and the importance of using personal protective equipment (PPE) and interpreting arc flash labels. Additionally, students will acquire foundational knowledge essential for working in telecommunications at the physical layer and understand the routine maintenance procedures necessary to ensure the reliability and longevity of data center equipment. This well-rounded skill set will equip students to work effectively in modern data center environments.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Review the evolution of data centers and the physical networking layer, and explore the standards, terminology, and acronyms associated with mission-critical facilities.
- Describe and analyze the major electrical and mechanical components found in a data center, their purposes, classifications, and how they interconnect.
- Describe the function and characteristics of each fire suppression system.
- Demonstrate the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in a data center environment.
- Analyze the relationship between airflow and energy efficiency in a data center.
- Apply energy concepts relevant to data center efficiency, focusing on airflow calculations and Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) to optimize performance and energy use.
- Analyze various types of documentation, including the Basis of Design, Sequence of Operations, commissioning documents, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) drawings.
- Describe the routine procedures and activities that are commonly performed to ensure the proper functioning, reliability, and longevity of equipment within a data center.
- Implement standard maintenance practices and predictive maintenance techniques on data center equipment.
- Identify the definitions and components of Manuals of Procedures (MOP) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
- Describe the fundamental concepts and components involved in the Fiber optic cabling.
- Communicate effectively using listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
- Solve problems using critical and creative thinking skills.
- Utilizing and applying software where appropriate to the course.
- Attempt to earn a nationally recognized OSHA 10 Hour General Industry Certification.
