BIOT 150 - Automation for Biotechnology PREREQUISITES: BIOT 100: Survey of Biotechnology CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 2 LAB HOURS MIN: 2 Introduces the basic theory and operation of programmable automation controllers. Demonstrates how to connect to a PAC and basic network as well as the use of industry software for monitoring PAC behavior. A special emphasis is placed on DeltaV software. This course uses lecture, laboratory activities, and online simulations to prepare students with introductory knowledge of PACs for working as an operator in the biopharmaceutical manufacturing industry.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Operate DeltaV software to monitor and maintain the batch within specifications from start to finish
- Understand when and how to perform manual tasks on batches monitored by DeltaV
- Use DeltaV data to provide production status updates during shift, report anomalies, monitor equipment, etc.
- Review basic computer operations
- Gain a basic understanding of relay and ladder logic
- Describe logic circuits
- Describe the common parts of programmable controllers
- Demonstrate ability to read and interpret technical documents
- Demonstrate ability to use various types of software applicable to the course
