OTAS 211 - Current Issues and Emerging Trends in Occupational Therapy


PREREQUISITES: OTAS 206 Communication and Documentation Essentials in Occupational Therapy; OTAS 207 Fieldwork Level 1-B

Explores how occupational therapy practice is changing domestically and globally to incorporate innovative and emerging practice models. Reviews advocacy issues and discusses current and emerging trends in OT with reflection on practice aspects across different settings still relevant and effective despite changes in society, culture, and health care contexts. Emphasis placed on understanding occupation and occupational performance in contexts and environments at the personal, physical, social, cultural, temporal, spatial, and virtual levels. Students will analyze OT’s journey from the past into the future and research factors influencing the practice of occupational therapy throughout the world. Covers workforce and system challenges and their response. Students will research technological and professional advances within traditional and emerging practice areas, along with a review of current supervision requirements, and will complete and present a project.  Course also includes a comprehensive review of the program to-date and practice testing (part 1 of 2) to prepare students for Fieldwork Level 2 and their certification exam.   

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will: 

1. Demonstrate and apply knowledge of occupational therapy history, philosophical base, theory, and sociopolitical climate and their importance in meeting society’s current and future occupational needs as well as how these factors influence and are influenced by practice [B.2.2]. 

2. Demonstrate knowledge of and apply the interaction of occupation and activity, with focus on context (environmental and personal factors) [B.2.3]. 

3. Demonstrate understanding of how occupation and occupational performance is impacted/influenced by contexts/environments (personal, physical, social, cultural, temporal, spatial, and virtual) and how this relates to policy/structures on OT practice/delivery [B.2.3; B.4.1]. 

4. Demonstrate understanding and describe how social determinants of health for persons, groups, and populations with or at risk for disabilities and chronic health conditions and distinguishes the epidemiological factors that impact the public health and welfare of populations [B.1.3]. 

5. Research and analyze professional documents/articles/studies [B.5.1; B.5.3] related to ethics in OT and explain/describe how ethical challenges and dilemmas can arise re: emerging practice trends, assistive technology/AI, etc. [B.2.10]. 

6. Research, analyze, and retrieve articles/studies [B.5.1;B.5.3] re: advocacy issues/topics applicable to current and emerging areas/trends within OT (local and global); explain how sociocultural, socioeconomic, diversity, and lifestyle factors influence the needs and trends of individuals, groups, and populations [B.1.2] 

8. Return to existing PDTs (professional and personal) and refine strategy/plan to address long-term career objectives (practice, continuing education, advocacy efforts, etc.) to include a goal relating to remaining current on emerging practice areas and/or trends [B.2.9]. 

Program Review:  

9. As part of program review and completion, demonstrate knowledge of national requirements for credentialing and requirements for licensure, certification, or registration consistent with federal and state laws [B.4.5].  

10. As part of program review, demonstrate knowledge re: roles of the OTR and OTA and define and describe effective, competency-based legal and ethical supervision of occupational therapy assistants and non-occupational therapy personnel [B.4.9]. 

11. As part of program review, demonstrate knowledge regarding the OTA Program Curricular Threads (“OTA IMPACT”): Occupation, Technical Skills and Technology, Active Engagement/Participation, Intra/Interprofessionalism, Meaningful Metrics/Measures, Practice, Performance, and Personal Skills, Advocacy/Leadership, Clinical Excellence, Therapeutics 

12. Review OTA Program Student Competencies and Learning Outcomes to address any areas of questions or concerns prior to students taking their practice exam and beginning their Fieldwork 2 placements in Spring.
