ASEP 109 - GM ASEP Engine Performance Systems I

PREREQUISITES: ASEP 113 GM ASEP Electrical I
CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3
LECTURE HOURS MIN: 2
LAB HOURS MIN: 2
TOTAL CONTACT HOURS MIN: 64

This is the first of three courses on engine performance for modern GM passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks. Students study the fundamental operation of internal combustion engines, including gasoline direct injection and diesel injection. Emphasis is placed on the diagnosis, service, and repair of air induction, ignition, fuel storage and delivery, and electronic engine control systems, as well as emission control strategies and techniques. Students learn to use precision measuring instruments and GM specialty tools to diagnose, service, and repair engine performance systems. Required GM Center of Learning modules continue in this course, and students build readiness for related ASE certification exams.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
  1. Demonstrate proper shop safety practices while in the labs.

  2. Explain four-stroke cycle fundamentals and volumetric efficiency.

  3. Identify and explain the operation of fuel injection systems.

  4. Identify and explain operation of ignition systems.

  5. Identify and explain operation of vehicle emission systems.

  6. Identify and explain operation of sensors and actuators.

  7. Retrieve DTC’s and freeze frame data with a scan tool.

  8. Diagnose fuel and ignition faults.

  9. Describe the major engine operating systems and their function.

  10. Identify engine configurations.

  11. Demonstrate basic engine diagnosis including compression and leak down testing.
