ASEP 101 - GM ASEP Steering and Suspension Systems PREREQUISITES: ASEP 100 - Introduction to GM ASEP Program CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 2 LAB HOURS MIN: 2 TOTAL CONTACT HOURS MIN: 64 This is the first of two courses introducing the theory, diagnosis, service, and repair of GM steering and suspension systems on late-model GM passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks. Students learn to use precision measuring instruments and GM-specific service tools and equipment to inspect, adjust, and repair components across common steering and suspension designs.
The course also covers system operation, common failure modes, and OEM procedures, with an emphasis on safety, documentation, and workmanship. Students continue required GM Center of Learning (online) modules and build readiness for ASE certification exams related to chassis systems.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Demonstrate proper shop safety practices while in the labs.
- Identify tools used for steering and suspension repair.
- Diagnose steering and suspension concerns and determine worn/defective components.
- Remove, inspect and service or replace front or rear wheel bearings.
- Inspect, rotate, mount and balance tires.
- Diagnose abnormal tire pull and drifting/pulling concerns.
- Perform Pre-Alignment inspections.
- Perform 4-wheel alignments.
