ASEP 210 - GM ASEP Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Fundamentals and Safety

In this first course of a two-course sequence, students begin studying the mechanical theory, diagnosis, service, and repair of modern GM hybrid and electric vehicles, including longitudinally and transversely mounted hybrid and electric drive motors. Instruction emphasizes the safe use of precision measuring tools and GM-specific service equipment needed to diagnose, service, and repair the mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems of hybrid and electric drivetrains found in modern GM passenger vehicles and light duty trucks. Throughout the course, students complete required modules in GM’s Center of Learning (service technician online training) and continue preparing for nationally recognized ASE certification exams.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:  

  1. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of Electric Vehicle (EV) and Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) versus the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) equipped vehicle.
  2. Discuss and demonstrate personal and shop safety procedures.
  3. Describe vehicle safety systems including service safety disconnect; interlock loops, and GFI protection.
  4. Describe battery pack technology including configurations, types and energy concepts.
  5. Identify basic propulsion systems and power transfer systems including AC and DC motor technology used in EV and HEV designs.
  6. Describe standard ICE and HEV/ICE design differences.
  7. Identify tools, tests equipment and service procedures used in the servicing of EV and HEV’s.
