VETN 140 - Veterinary Assistant Nursing

This course introduces students to the husbandry, medical care, behavior and nutrition of companion animals.  Topics covered include safe animal restraint techniques, medical recordkeeping, obtaining patient information, patient exam procedures, specimen collection techniques, administration of oral medication, basic grooming and husbandry.  This course also discusses nutritional requirements for companion animals in all life stages.  In addition, this course covers basic concepts relating to companion animal behavior.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
  1. Discuss energy and nutrient requirements for various life stages of companion animals and list substances that, when ingested, result in toxicity.
  2. Describe how animal anatomy and physiology are integrated with animal behavior; compare normal, abnormal, and aggressive animal behavior; and discuss low-stress animal handling techniques.
  3. Outline nursing procedures including basic patient care and grooming, assisting with bandaging, sample collection, and following DVM/RVT orders on administering medications and treatments as allowed by law.
  4. Safely and effectively restrain companion animals
  5. Gather subjective and objective patient information efficiently
  6. Collect diagnostic samples of urine and feces
  7. Perform basic grooming such as bathing, nail trims and ear cleaning
  8. Administer medication by PO route

  • Handling of diagnostic speciments
  • Administering and dispensing of medications
  • Nursing care including record keeping
