Examines the importance of livestock in the field of agriculture, and the place of meats and other animal products in the human diet.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Define the breadth of animal agriculture.
- Describe major changes in food products and explain how they relate to the characteristics of current animals.
- Apply fundamental concepts of nutrition, reproduction and husbandry to animal needs.
- Identify the classes of nutrients for basic nutrition.
- Describe the components and functions of animal production facilities, specifically for food animals (90%) and to some degree companion animals (10%).
- Explain the effects of international trade dynamics on food, grains and fiber and how they relate to U.S. agriculture.
- Explain the difference between food quality and food safety.
- Describe the most effective methods to avoid or prevent food-borne health problems.
- Use mathematics to solve general agriculture problems in both the field and the laboratory.
