The identification, selection, installation and maintenance of annual and perennial grasses and flowering plants. Emphasis is placed on selection of appropriate plant material for Midwestern landscapes.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Identify the major groups of annual bedding plants.
- Identify the major groups of perennial flowering plants.
- Identify the major groups of hardy ornamental grasses.
- Explain the cultural requirements of annuals, perennials and grasses in Midwestern landscapes.
- Describe the growth characteristics of major herbaceous plant groups and their use in various landscape situations.
- Demonstrate the proper techniques of planting, watering, fertilizing, and pruning herbaceous landscape plants.
COURSE CONTENT: Topical areas of study include -
- Annual, perennial and grass identification
- Selection of plant material for soil, water and temperature conditions
- Selection of plant material for height, color, texture and growth habit
- Installation techniques for annuals, perennials, and grasses
- Techniques for maintaining annual and perennial landscapes
