ALTF 103 - Principles of Alternative / Renewable Energies

Covers basic principles and history of alternative energy sources. Industry and government status of geothermal, wind, solar, biomass, fuel cells and other energy sources will be highlighted as well as a thorough discussion of Smart Grid technology. Alternative and traditional energies will be defined and compared in terms of today’s use. This course will provide First Responder for Hybrid and Electric Vehicle safety training, and discuss evolving energy careers.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Explain the basic history and design principles of renewable energies.
- Explore the potentials of renewable energy technologies to help solve current environmental and economic problems.
- Calculate a variety of cost and savings analyses, as well as comparative pollutant output analyses of the various types of renewable energy systems.
- Classify and describe the different types of renewable energy systems, including solar energy, wind power, geothermal, renewable energy fuel cells, and biomass.
- Explain the effect of government regulations, politics, and corporate development on the renewable energies industry.
- Explore the types of job opportunities available in the alternative/renewable energies industry, and investigate the skills required for these careers.

- Historical overview of energy sources
- Environmental, political, and economic issues of alternative/renewable energies
- Classification of energy systems
- State of the alternative/renewable energy industry
- Job opportunities in alternative/renewable energy
- Effects of government regulations and corporate development on renewable energies
