COMM 201 - Introduction to Mass Communication

A survey of the print and electronic media that compose the mass media industry. Included in the survey are the history, technology, utilization, and influence of corporate, creative, and social media as well as the combined symbiotic impact.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Identify the historical development of mass media.
  2. Describe the relationships that exist among the types of mass media.
  3. Outline the functions of mass media in our society.
  4. Outline the means each medium uses in securing feedback on audience size and monetary income.
  5. Recognize and evaluate the functions and resources of the news industry in our society.
  6. Describe the influence of the mass media on societal attitudes and perceptions.
  7. Describe the financial basis of all mass media.
  8. Explain the role of the mass media in local, state, and national elections.
  9. Identify the current purpose and utility of media, including specifically social media.
  10. Analyze the development of technological trends and the resulting impact.
  11. Describe the role of the consumer and producer of mass media.
