An introduction to communication principles and practices that enable small groups, such as committees, conferences and public discussions, to function effectively as well as the practices which limit small group effectiveness. The course is pragmatic in approach, and the student will learn small group dynamics through participation.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Recognize small group communication dynamics and how they operate in various world contexts.
- Analyze the functionality and appropriateness of various leadership styles.
- Employ the primary methods of decision making appropriately in various contexts.
- Recognize external influences on small group interactions.
- Differentiate between effective and ineffective conflict management skills in small groups.
- Critique the various roles and interaction styles present in groups.
- Function effectively in groups with varying problem-solving tasks.
- Apply current research findings to the understanding of small group communication.
