PREREQUISITES: COMM 101 - Fundamentals of Public Speaking  or COMM 102 - Introduction to Interpersonal Communication  and ENGL 111 - English Composition

This course is designed to enhance students’ knowledge and understanding of human communication among multiple gender identities. Examines the concepts of sex and gender, and how those concepts affect communication in theory and real world application. Explores how gender is perceived in various social and global contexts.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Recognize the relationship between gender, sexual identity, power, and communication.
  2. Identify and describe challenges to effective gender communication.
  3. Explain and evaluate how language and nonverbal communication are affected by gender
  4. Examine how gendered communication styles learned through socialization affect relationships.
  5. Discuss gender diversity and how it realtes to non-binary individuals.
  6. Understand and explain how gender affects other aspects of identity such as race, age, sexuality, and social class.
  7. Analyze and explain how gender is related to different cultural practices and contexts.
  8. Employ appropriate gender communication in multiple settings such as the workplace, home, professional, and social settings.
  9. Examine and explain social issues related to gender in the global community.
  10. Analyze the relationship between gender and the media, and its effects on our perception of identity.
