CONT 127 - Electrical Basics

Electrical Basics is an introductory course covering both AC and DC circuits. Studies include electron theory, Ohm’s Law, Watt’s Law, Kirchoff’s Law, series circuits, series-parallel circuits, electromagnetic induction, current, voltage, resistance, power, inductance, capacitance, and transformers. Demonstrate the use of electrical equipment, troubleshooting, installation of hardware, metering equipment, lights, switches, and safety procedures and practices.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Describe the differences in AC and DC current.
  2. Draw a simple DC circuit and explain various components.
  3. Describe the properties of resistance, voltage, current and power.
  4. Use Ohm’s Law to calculate values.
  5. Use a multimeter to measure values in a circuit.
  6. Draw and explain series, parallel, series-parallel, open and short circuits.
  7. Explain the properties of magnetism and electro-magnetism.
  8. Describe the operation of capacitors, inductors, and transformers.
  9. Describe various power sources.
  10. Explain proper fusing and wire sizing.
  11. Explain proper safety practices when working with electricity.
  12. Identify various components on a wiring diagram and in an actual circuit.
  13. Solve mathematical problems relating to electrical systems.
  14. Think critically and independently analyze, synthesize, and evaluate technical problems and information.
  15. Identify and interpret health, safety, and welfare standards as dictated by local, state or federal agencies.
