CRIM 112 - Public Safety Dispatching PROGRAM: Criminal Justice CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 3 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Fall, 2018
Studies the basic requirements of a public safety dispatcher and familiarizes the student with the fundamentals required to effectively process 9-1-1 emergencies and classify non emergency situations. This course will also prepare students to navigate a Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system and other radio technology, as well as give the student a basic understanding of radio communication techniques.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Recognize the difference between an emergency and nonemergency call.
- Demonstrate an understanding of information used in the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
- Apply knowledge of radio communication techniques and technology
- Identify the appropriate public safety agencies needed in a specific situation.
- Explain the responsibilities of a public safety dispatcher in regard to the National Incident Management System and Incident Command System.
- Demonstrate appropriate interpersonal communication skills of a public safety dispatcher.
- Discuss the liability issues associated with public safety dispatching.
- Explain the TTY system.
- Explain the duties of a public safety dispatcher in various emergency situations.
