CRIM 113 - Criminal Investigation


PREREQUISITES: CRIM 101 - Introduction to Criminal Justice Systems .

This course is a study of the elements and techniques of criminal investigations. Primary aspects include crime scene examination, collection of evidence and search for witnesses, developing and questioning suspects, and protecting the integrity of physical evidence found at the scene and while in transit to a forensic science laboratory. Procedures for the use and control of informants, inquiries keyed to basic leads, and other information-gathering activity and chain of custody procedures will also be reviewed.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the historical and current concept of criminal investigations and other investigative procedures in terms of scientific and technological concepts.
  2. Apply the appropriate concepts and skills in interviews and interrogations.
  3. Demonstrate skills necessary to differentiate among investigative typologies including offenses, offenders and victims.
  4. Employ skills necessary to summarize his/her investigative efforts and skills in report writing practicums.
  5. Examine the fundamentals of criminal investigation.
  6. Explain the application of these fundamentals to an investigation of specific crimes.
  7. Assess the role of “basic leads” in the identification of suspects.
  8. Identify the legal significance and integrity of evidence in relation to all aspects of criminal investigation.
  9. Discuss ethical awareness in criminal investigation.
