CRIM 114 - Introduction to Security


PREREQUISITES: CRIM 101 - Introduction to Criminal Justice Systems .

Introduces fundamental security operations, risk management, design, and crime prevention strategies within governmental and privately run organizations.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Be familiar with the various aspects of physical security planning.
  2. Understand the evolving risk management issues that impact private businesses.
  3. Understand and explain the tripod of security: physical security measures, personnel and documentation.
  4. Understand and explain/discuss the basic risk assessment process.
  5. Understand and explain the emergency management process.
  6. Understand the need for introducing security at the design stages of building.
  7. Know why a Threat/Risk Assessment is an integral component of a security survey and how it affects the various physical security elements required.
  8. Have a general understanding of crime prevention strategies.
  9. Be able to identify the components of the physical security systems and identify weaknesses and vulnerabilities of a system.
  10. Know how to conduct a comprehensive security survey and report your observations by means of a Security Survey Report.
  11. Demonstrate how an emergency response plan can better prepare your organization to respond to various emergencies at your work.
  12. Be cognizant of the history, threats to, and legal aspects of security.
  13. Identify several elements of an effective emergency response plan.
