CRIM 120 - Introduction to Courts
PREREQUISITES: CRIM 101 - Introduction to Criminal Justice Systems .

Introduces topics related to the adjudication process in criminal cases, including arraignments and preliminary hearings, suppression hearings, trials, sentencing, juvenile court, and probation and parole. Reviews the role of criminal justice personnel in court processes.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Explain the historical evolution of American courts into their present structure and operations.
- Understand the social and political context that shapes the American court system.
- Develop a thorough comprehension of the chronological operation of the adjudication process in the criminal justice system.
- Discuss the roles of each position involved in the operation of the adjudication process in the criminal justice system.
- Synthesize from the U.S. Constitution the constitutional rights and principles provided to citizens in the adjudication process.
- Analyze the constitutional procedural requirements applicable in the pretrial process.
- Analyze the constitutional procedural requirements applicable in the trial process.
- Analyze the constitutional procedural requirements applicable in the appeal process.
- Analyze the responsibilities and interactions of each participant in the courtroom work group.
