EDSN 217 - Visual Merchandising


PREREQUISITES: EDSN 107 - Design and Construction Graphics .

This course presents students with a survey of the many elements of visual merchandising and display currently used in retail design and decorative accessorization to attract customers. Students are introduced to the principles of retail space planning, fixture arrangement and the display equipment required in visual merchandising including fixtures, mannequins, signage, lighting and props. Includes research in marketing, color psych, and lighting. Field trips and hands-on projects are an integral part of the course.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expect to:

  1. Execute all necessary research, create contacts, develop a concept theme and problem solve with gathered information to successfully complete the project.
  2. Comprehension of proper retail merchandising, marketing and display techniques.
  3. Accurate traffic zoning, space layout and utilization of psychologically correct colors and compositions to promote maximum sales.
  4. Creative application of interior finishes and furnishings.
  5. Suitable general, accent and security lighting solutions.
  6. Accurate, detailed working drawings of custom case goods and displays incorporating lighting solutions to enhance merchandise.
  7. Create/design logo and design concept for target market.
  8. Create appropriate visuals for the project concept.
  9. Allow students to use their accumulated skills and knowledge to independently create and format a project based upon the given parameters.
  10. Provide students the opportunity to showcase their abilities in an advanced project.
  11. Make a persuasive presentation to the client.

COMPETENCIES: Student will demonstrate proficiencies in the following areas:

  1. Ability to choose an appropriate design concept based upon researched information.
  2. Ability to accurately plan and design a retail project.
  3. Ability to incorporate and utilize skills and techniques from previous courses.
  4. Ability to complete a project within a specified time frame.
  5. Ability to creatively format a project and prepare a complete design presentation.
  6. Preparation of the oral presentation for project jury.
