EECT 232 - Advanced Computer Troubleshooting

To provide an opportunity for students to obtain the knowledge and skills necessary to install, learn to use, and to troubleshoot all major operating systems, as well as prepare for a successful result on the CompTIA A+ Operating System exam.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Identify the operating systems functions, structure, and major system files to navigate the operating system and how to get to needed technical information.
  2. Perform DOS command prompt procedures, use of Windows 2000 and Windows 9x device manager, control panel, and run box.
  3. Identify and define major systems files, including io.sys, msdos.sys, command.com, win.ini, system.ini, boot.ini, ntldr, etc.
  4. Identify the basic system boot sequences and boot methods, including the steps to create an emergency boot disk with utilities installed for Windows series operating systems.
  5. Install and troubleshoot PC peripherals.
  6. Use common procedures for loading/adding and configuring application device drivers, and the necessary software for peripheral devices.
  7. Recognize and interpret the meaning of common error codes and startup messages from the boot sequence, and identify steps to correct the problems.
  8. Recognize common problems and determine how to resolve them.
  9. Identify the networking capabilities of Windows including procedures for connecting to the network.
  10. Identify concepts and capabilities relating to the Internet and basic procedures for setting up a system for Internet access.
  11. Supporting Printers using Windows.
  12. Introduction to Mac OS and Linux.
