ENGL 083 - Reading Strategies for College PREREQUISITES/COREQUISITE: IVYT 111 - Student Success in University Transfer

Prepares students for the demands of reading in a variety of college-level courses through improved reading flexibility, vocabulary, and comprehension. Emphasizes critical reading strategies.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
- Establish a systematic approach to reading for study that utilizes a student’s learning style.
- Read with increased flexibility and effectiveness in order to understand diverse materials including, college-level texts.
- Interpret visual rhetoric such as graphs, tables, charts, and other visual images.
- Process text through summarizing, outlining, mapping, and note taking.
- Develop personal and academic vocabulary through effective use of word attack skills and context clues.
- Use vocabulary reference materials such as a dictionary, thesaurus, and computer aids skillfully.
- Identify and differentiate between stated and implied main ideas and supporting details.
- Identify patterns of organization in a reading passage and recognize the roles of transitions in clarifying the pattern.
- Distinguish fact from opinion.
- Draw appropriate inferences from what is read.
- Identify author’s purpose and tone and distinguish between literal and figurative language with emphasis on recognizing connotation.
- Use critical reading skills to recognize bias and evaluate text.
- Use appropriate strategies for locating, reading, processing, and evaluating resources for scholarly and career-related research.

GRADING POLICY A course grade of C or higher is required for successful completion. Students who do not meet this standard are encouraged to retake the COMPASS or ASSET placement exam.
