ENGL 202H - Creative Writing (Honors)

This course introduces students to opportunities for self-expression in one or more literary genres - fiction, poetry, drama, and the creative essay.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Illustrate an understanding and practice of creativity in the medium of language through the development of texts.
  2. Develop an aesthetic appreciation for creative writing in one or more literary genres - fiction, poetry, drama, and nonfiction through reading and discussing literary works.
  3. Demonstrate greater expressive proficiency through a better understanding of such literary conventions as plot, setting, characterization, point of view, meter, imagery, symbolism, figurative language, dialogue, and other such matters of style.
  4. Demonstrate a high degree of competency in adhering to conventions of Standard English.
  5. Develop revision skills as a part of the writing process.
  6. Distinguish among the creative opportunities and constraints of different literary genres.
  7. Use critical thinking skills to gain insight into major genres in class.
  8. Understand a variety of literary forms within the chosen genre(s) such as flash fiction, short plays, Ekphrastic poetry, personal essay and memoir.
  9. Develop an ability to understand and appreciate literary texts as reflections of universal human concerns.
  10. Demonstrate an awareness of analysis of craft, including knowledge of appropriate terminology.
  11. Engage with complex issues, diverse ideas, and interdisciplinary ways of thinking that develop and enhance critical thinking skills and promote continuous learning outside the classroom.
  12. Exhibit dedication and preparation for future undergraduate and graduate studies through high levels of academic performance and scholarship.
  13. Develop collaboration and camaraderie with student and faculty scholars, creating a strong network for mutual, intellectual and social support.
