This course offers students advanced opportunities for self- expression in one or more focused literary genres - fiction, poetry, drama, or creative nonfiction.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Develop an advanced understanding and practice of creativity in the medium of language.
  2. Develop an advanced aesthetic appreciation for creative writing in one or more literary genres - fiction, poetry, drama, or nonfiction-through critical reading and discussing literary works.
  3. Demonstrate greater expressive proficiency through a better understanding of such literary conventions as plot, setting, characterization, point of view, meter, imagery, symbolism, figurative language, dialogue, and other such matters of style.
  4. Demonstrate a high degree of competency in adhering to conventions of Standard English.
  5. Develop revision skills as a part of the writing process.
  6. Distinguish among the creative opportunities and constraints in one or more literary genres.
