ENGL 210 - Literature and Life: Thematic PREREQUISITES: ENGL 111 - English Composition PROGRAM: Liberal Arts CREDIT HOURS MIN: 3 LECTURE HOURS MIN: 3 DATE OF LAST REVISION: Summer, 2011
Literature and Life is a thematic introductory literature course. Students will read American and/or English literature in relation to a specific cultural problem or theme. Students will be introduced to critical/literary approaches, draw conclusions about similarities and differences between texts (both in terms of content and technique), and practice written response to the texts.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Develop an increased proficiency in the areas of analyzing and interpreting works of literature.
- Construct detailed and well organized compositions that demonstrate an increased appreciation for the relationship between assigned texts and course theme.
- Apply critical thinking skills and reading strategies to both the writing process and to literary interpretation.
- Recognize thematic similarities between texts.
- Clearly identify and address questions of audience and rhetorical contexts.
