ENGL 210 - Literature and Life: Thematic

Literature and Life is a thematic introductory literature course. Students will read American and/or English literature in relation to a specific cultural problem or theme. Students will be introduced to critical/literary approaches, draw conclusions about similarities and differences between texts (both in terms of content and technique), and practice written response to the texts.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Develop an increased proficiency in the areas of analyzing and interpreting works of literature.
  2. Construct detailed and well organized compositions that demonstrate an increased appreciation for the relationship between assigned texts and course theme.
  3. Apply critical thinking skills and reading strategies to both the writing process and to literary interpretation.
  4. Recognize thematic similarities between texts.
  5. Clearly identify and address questions of audience and rhetorical contexts.
