Provides an introduction to the art and history of poetry. Emphasizes a greater appreciation and understanding of the genre through critical analysis of various poetic forms and literary devices.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:
- Demonstrate a greater aesthetic appreciation for poetry through the reading and discussion of poetry.
- Examine the evolution of poetic form through the study of poems from the Elizabethan period through the twentieth century.
- Examine and demonstrate an understanding of key terms, such as poetic conventions, poetic forms, poetic meter, rhythm, imagery, symbolism, figurative language, and other such matters of style.
- Develop greater familiarity with academic writing and documentation standards through the use of required papers.
- Analyze thematic elements of poems using the major forms of literary criticism.
- Demonstrate an understanding of poetic craftsmanship based on the author’s commentary.
- Convey the impact of poetry as an oral art form.
