ENGL 224 - British Literature To 1800

Survey of English Literature I introduces the student to British literature from Beowulf to the eighteenth century. Included will be a discussion of the major historical, cultural, intellectual, and political events which influenced the development of British literature.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Understand and appreciate the role literature plays in British society and culture.
  2. Apply critical reading and thinking skills in analyzing literature.
  3. Demonstrate awareness of language as a tool for communication, expression, and learning.
  4. Research and critically evaluate information relevant to the study of literature.
  5. Identify major movements within British literature.
  6. Understand the differences between the major genres.
  7. Examine the impact and role literature plays in their own lives.
  8. Research and critically evaluate information to produce writing with MLA formal documentation, which consists of in-text citations and a final list of all sources cited, on topics appropriate to the study of literature.

  • The major genres (prose, poetry, and drama)
  • Reading and thinking critically
  • Major literary movements in British literature from Beowulf to the 18th century
