ENGR 200 - Thermodynamics

Introduces thermodynamic fundamentals such as the first and second laws, entropy, reversible and irreversible processes, properties of pure substances, and provides for application to practical engineering problems.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Explain basic concepts of thermodynamics such as state, process, equilibrium, temperature, work, energy, and efficiency.
  2. Apply the first law of thermodynamics to practical problems of both closed and open systems.
  3. Find the thermodynamics properties of a pure, compressible substance in single or dual phases.
  4. Apply the second law of thermodynamics through the Clausius and Kelvin-Plank statements.
  5. Compare the performance of power or refrigeration cycles with the efficiency or coefficient of performance limits imposed by the second law.
  6. Analyze refrigeration and heat pump system processes and calculate performance.
  7. Analyze vapor power system processes and calculate performance.
  8. Analyze gas power system processes and calculate performance.
  9. Work as a member of a design team to complete a project using basic thermodynamic principles.
