Survey of basic garden landscape design. Includes topics on plant types and uses, client requirements, design concepts, site analysis, and garden planting plans and project presentation methods. Emphasizes the principles and techniques for designing outdoor gathering and living places.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expect to:

  1. Apply design principles to garden projects.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of focal points and vistas.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of human needs and environmental psychology.
  4. Design functional, creative and aesthetic outdoor environments.
  5. Create garden designs for a variety of themes and styles.
  6. Understand basic site evaluation techniques.

  7. Prepare basic plans.
  8. Design development.
  9. Use plantings appropriately.
  10. Prepare basic landscape plans.
  11. Prepare basic planting plans.

    Plant science

    Growing conditions- (consult reference books, landscape consultants, nursery catalogs, computer software programs, internet, etc.)

        Hardy zone and growth season

        Soil preference (clay, sand, loam, pH levels)

        Orientation (sun or shade, NSEW)

        Water conditions

    Plant nutrition

        N-P-K (nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium) and fertilizers

        Photosynthesis

Functional uses of plants

Plant types

Forms: columnar, pyramidal, round, weeping, horizontal, mounded

Sizes: flats, containers (gallons), ball and burlap (B&B), bare root stock
