HLHS 112 - Home Health Aide Bridge


PREREQUISITES: Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Certification

This course provides students who have successfully passed the Certified Nurse Aide course and are on the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) Nurse Aide registry in good standing, the knowledge and practical skills necessary to function as a home health aide. The course follows the established content criteria of the Indiana Home and Hospice Care Foundation, Home Health Aide Certification. Upon completion of each content area, students will be eligible to apply to take the corresponding written and skills examination for Home Health Aide certification. Inclusion on the Indiana State Department of Health Home Health Aide Registry is facilitated by home health/hospice employers after employment and verification of required skills competency evaluation. Curriculum meets minimum requirements outlined in Federal OBRA-87 regulations for home health aides.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Describe fundamental principles of documenting care given in the home care environment.
  2. Utilize principles of infection control and standard precautions within the home health care setting when performing care for clients.
  3. Describe issues specific to home care clients; including, substance abuse, elder abuse, working with infants and children, and hospice and palliative care in the home.
  4. Describe emergency management and planning in the home care environment, including environmental safety, fire safety, driving safety, and natural disaster responses in home care.
  5. Describe essential principles in planning, preparing, and serving food to clients.
  6. Describe essential skills necessary in care of the client environment specific to home care; including, establishing an individualized care plan, home care cleaning supplies, care of laundry, and cleaning a client home.

  • Maintaining professional boundaries
  • Client confidentiality specific to home health
  • Home safety and considerations
  • Home care team members
  • Dealing with clients and families in their environment

Section 3, Working with People:

  • Substance Abuse issues in the client or family
  • Elder Abuse
  • Working with infants and children
  • Child abuse
  • Hospice and palliative care in the home

Section 4, Home Health Emergencies:
