HLHS 130 - Qualified Medication Aide (QMA) Update

The Scope of Practice for Qualified Medication Aides (QMA) was expanded on May 20, 2002 and became effective January 1, 2005. Indiana Administrative Code 412 IAC 2-1-10 Scope of Practice states that QMA’s must submit proof of a minimum of six (6) hours per year of education in the area of medication administration and submit proof of the same with the appropriate fee to the Indiana State Department of Health for recertification. This six (6) hour course includes the required hours of review of Administration of Medications via G-tube or J-Tube, Blood Glucose Monitoring (specific to monitor used), and Hemoccult Testing. Additional topics will vary for each year.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Discuss appropriate medical asepsis.
  2. Demonstrate administering medication via the gastrostomy tube (G-tube) and jejunal tube (J-Tube).
  3. Apply a dressing to a healed Gastrostomy or Jejunal tube site.
  4. Demonstrate administration of medication via metered dose inhaler.
  5. Apply a dressing to a minor skin tear and minor skin conditions (i.e., dermatitis, scabies, pediculosis, fungal infection, psoriasis, eczema, first degree burn, and Stage I decubitus ulcer).
  6. Demonstrate emptying and changing a colostomy bag, administering a sitz bath, and apply a cold, dry compress.
  7. Perform diabetic testing (i.e., urine and finger stick, collecting fecal or urine specimens, and hemoccult testing).
  8. Demonstrate use of Pulse Oximetry and Oxygen Saturation/administration of oxygen per Nasal Cannula/non-sealing mask.
  9. Discuss appropriate techniques for instilling a commercially prepared enama.
  10. Discuss a variety of medication topics.

Requirements for expanded QMA role as outlined in the Indiana Administrative Code 412 IAC 2-1-9, Scope of Practice regulation that indicates changes for the QMA.

Ivy Tech cannot guarantee that any student will pass a certification or licensing exam. The goal of providing a certification exam studies class is to assist you in understanding the material sufficiently to provide a firm foundation for your studies as you prepare for the exam.

CERTIFICATION EXAM

All students enrolled in this course are required to take the corresponding certification exam at some point on or before the last day of the course. The application fee is paid as a consumable fee at the beginning of the course. Because this exam is a required activity, failure to take the exam will result in the student receiving a grade no higher than a C for the course.
