Provides knowledge and skills needed to facilitate attainment of optimal levels of ability with a focus on achieving maximum function and self-sufficiency. Introduces common physical ailments of patients in subacute, long term, and outpatient facilities. Examines safety measures and common treatment modalities, including range of motion exercises, use of self-help devices and ambulation programs. Also addressed are instruction and assistance in activities of daily living and maintenance programs following formal therapy.
MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
- Outline the philosophy and basic principles of restorative nursing.
- Identify common physical ailments of the cardiovascular, integumentary, musculoskeletal, pulmonary, and neurological systems.
- Discuss benefits and guidelines for performing range of motion (ROM) and common exercises in rehabilitation therapy.
- Discuss effective monitoring of common exercises in rehabilitation therapy.
- Demonstrate proper assistance utilizing nutritional assistive devices.
- Identify the role of the Restorative and Rehab Therapy Aide in the patient care team.
