HOSP 173 - Special Event Management

This course is designed as a detailed look at the planning of social events, such as theme parties and weddings, planning for fundraising events; planning recognition events; and planning entertainment for events. Topics included are different event types, design and creativity for events, use of contractors and suppliers, incorporation of sponsors, use of volunteers, and ethical and legal considerations of event planning. This course will serve as a foundation for students preparing for a career in event planning, as well as continuing education for those currently employed in the event industry. Students in this course will engage in experiential learning by becoming actively involved in the planning, preparation and execution of events facilitated by the instructor.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Identify the historic roots of celebration.
  2. Recognize the demographic changes affecting global event management growth.
  3. Identify new and emerging career opportunities and industry certifications in event management.
  4. Outline the stages of modern event management.
  5. Identify key sources of information for planning.
  6. Design and develop a strategic event and theme while managing a timeline and production schedule.
  7. Develop policies, procedures and practices expected of event staff and volunteers.
  8. Develop an event budget, correctly forecasting event revenue and expenses and report post-event financial results.
  9. Identify communication styles and develop leadership and problem solving abilities.
  10. Conduct an event site inspection.
  11. Recognize the importance of working effectively with third party suppliers and vendors.
  12. Identify the five P’s in event management and successful sponsorship and advertising campaigns.
  13. 11. Explain how to comply with standard event regulations and evaluate legal event documents.
  14. Demonstrate ability to use emerging technology within the event industry.
  15. Describe opportunities available to advance an event management career.
