HOSP 272 - The Tourism System

This course is designed to develop an understanding of travel trends and modes and the social, environmental, and economic impact on destination areas. The course explores major concepts in tourism, what makes tourism possible, and how tourism can become an important factor in the wealth of any nation. Emphasis is given to local, regional, and national tourism.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Understand what tourism is and its many deflections.
  2. Discover the many similarities in travel motivations, economic conditions, political situations, attractions, and tourist facilities during previous times and today.
  3. Evaluate future job opportunities in the tourism field.
  4. Recognize the types and functions of tourism organizations.
  5. Comprehend the importance of transportation in tourism.
  6. Study related industries: lodging, food service, time-sharing, meetings, and exhibitions and their relationship to tourism.
  7. Become familiar with tourism distribution system organizations and their functions.
  8. Understand attractions, recreation, gaming, retail, and entertainment as choices for tourism.
  9. Define motivations for travel and means to measure the motivations.
  10. Identify the cultural factors in tourism.
  11. Appreciate the impact that travel experiences have on the traveler, the host and the environment.
  12. Know the four major supply components that any tourist area must possess.
  13. Know the definition of demand and its application and importance in tourism development planning.
  14. Know the economic generators and impact of tourism.
  15. Learn the foals of tourism development and recognize that here are barriers to tourism that must be overcome.
  16. Recognize the worldwide importance of natural resource conservations and sustainable tourism development.
  17. Learn the travel research process.
  18. Use a well-planned marketing program to promote a tourist business.
  19. Identify the major global forces that are shaping tomorrow’s tourism.
