HOSP 280 - Co-op/Internship


PREREQUISITES: Program Advisor Approval

This course offers a practical experience in a commercial/non-commercial foodservice or hotel establishment in order to build specialized skills. This work-based experience provides an opportunity for students to transfer their academic preparation into actual work-based learning by acquiring “real world” skills and building ties with the business/professional community. (Students should have a site in mind prior to registering for this course–coordinator will assist.)

JOB PREPARATION ACTIVITIES:

  1. Letter of application to prospective firms.
  2. Resume or personal data sheet.
  3. Interview with a prospective firm.
  4. Follow-up letter and/or thank you.
  5. Intern self-evaluation.

Students should contact the coordinator ONE month prior to the semester in which they will enroll for work experience.

REPORTING ACTIVITIES:

  1. Weekly meeting with Coordinator.
  2. Weekly activity logs.
  3. Two or three paragraph typewritten memo attached to each set of activity logs as well as documentation of total hours completed to date.
  4. Weekly inspection of logbook reviewed and signed by supervisor.
  5. Complete the final work experience report (see guidelines).
  6. Final Comprehensive Exam.
  7. Practical Exam (Culinary and Baking students only).

Your success will be determined by several factors beyond the instruction you are given in the classroom including your test-taking skills, your willingness to study outside of class, and your satisfactory completion of appropriate practice exams. Certification and licensure exam questions are drawn from databases of hundreds of possible questions; therefore, a thorough understanding of the subject matter is required. Ivy Tech’s coursework is designed to assist you in understanding the material sufficiently to provide a firm foundation for your studies as you prepare for the exam.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES:  

1. Execute effective job search and interview strategies through writing a cover letter, writing a resume, writing a thank you letter, and completing an interview to secure an externship site with an approved training plan.
2. Demonstrate professionalism by reporting to the externship site on time, keeping appointments, and following the rules and regulations of the externship site.
3. Demonstrate written communication skills through written activity logs and in externship reflection paper.
4. Implement hospitality specific knowledge and skills to achieve operational efficiency and productivity to the standards of the externship site.
5. Utilize collaboration skills by working effectively with team members of the externship site while performing duties in an ethical manner.
6. Utilize problem solving skills, making decisions based on integrated knowledge of the functional areas of the externship site.
7. Demonstrate ability to practice concepts of customer service in the externship site experience.
8. Assemble and present a portfolio that demonstrates knowledge, skills and personal development.
9. Evaluate the externship experience in a reflection paper through written analysis of the strengths and challenges of site activities.
10. Apply acquired knowledge and skills from academic experience to civic engagement in service learning and reflect on the experience in a written narrative.
